Urban Swank was invited to preview the Houston Art Fair at Silver Street Event Space this week and got a chance to peek at all of the incredible artwork – both local and from around the world. It may come off as superfluous, but some say the city’s art market needs a little healthy competition.

Silver Street Studios in Houston’s First Ward filled up quickly with art lovers for the Houston Art Fair last night. This year, the fair (formerly known as the Houston Fine Art Fair) is being held the same weekend as the Texas Contemporary Art Fair at the George R. Brown Convention Center.  And while that may sound like a case of dueling shows, it’s being embraced by some in the arts community. “I think that the idea behind having the two fairs together is sort of a takeoff of what you see in the successful fairs in Art Basel in Miami,” says John Bernhard, publisher of Art Houston Magazine. When we first heard that two of the biggest art fairs in Houston were going down on the same weekend, our first thought was, “Do we really have to choose?”

With the exception of a couple of ultra-swanky Thursday preview events, the answer is “no.” Now that the Houston Art Fair has moved from NRG Center to the Silver Street Event Space, it’s only a 12-minute hop, skip and a jump (traffic permitting) over to Texas Contemporary at George R. Brown Convention Center, making it easy to check out both events. (more…)

This season, a trio of art fairs hits Houston, beginning with the Houston Art Fair (formerly the Houston Fine Art Fair), where nearly 50 local and international galleries exhibit Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at Silver Street Studios. On the same weekend, the Texas Contemporary event is held Downtown at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Opening-night festivities include a collaborative performance with the Houston Ballet’s Oliver Halkowich and multi-media artist Chris Doyle. And a week later, the semi-annual Bayou City Art Festival returns to the streets of Downtown with hundreds of outdoor booths. (more…)
